Old Skull Skateboards.com

Old Skull Skateboards is a collaberative effort of dedicated "skaterats" from the 80's whose lives were transformed and defined by their boards, trucks and wheels.

Our love of skateboarding grew as we did. We can sit for hours reminicing about the "old days" - the Bones Brigade demo's, asking Tony Hawk - "where's McGill at?" and such and such. Our first boards and the different classic graphics, first tricks, getting chased by the cops, skate jams.

Old School skateboarding is notstalgic and we invite all those interested to help us create a network of "skaterats" from around the world to take a break from your day and reminice about skateboarding - where it's been - where it is - and what's its future?

Share some of your expereinces with us!

How can small Indy shops stay in buiness when Tony Hawk and his shit clothing, shoe company are selling there shittie ass shit to the next gen. of skaters. Are they going to look back twenty years from now and say, " remember that sweet ass old school Tony Hawk shrit I got at Kohls"!!! Tony Hawk you did a lot for skateboarding but Kohls!!!!

yeah I hear you man....it is pretty weird growing up skating when it wasn't cool and jocks were calling you Airwalk Prototypes Moon Boots...now the cool kids seem to be the skaters...do the skaters make fun of the jocks now I wonder? like "dude why is your uniform the same as that other dudes?" hahah weird...Tony Hawk at Kohls...It's not as bad as McGill at Walmart selling crap decks to young kids

I hear you bro! What happened? But ask yourself "How much would you sell out for?" I would like to think that I have no price tag but I couldn't honestly say that if I was approached with a multi million dollar offer that I would decline. I would never buy or refer anyone to a dept. store or Wal-mart to get skate gear - that is sacreligious - if I spelled that right?

This topic is too complicated to even begin to discuss it on a blog. It is Capitalism that you are upset with. This has nothing to do with Tony Hawk, Kohls, Wal-Mart, or any other big corporate chain who is selling skateboard supplies. They are merely doing what they can or need to do in order to make money at any cost. The law of Capitalism. Without the Capitalist economic system all of these people and places you are blaming are empty. If you don't like it, then do not buy from them. Furthermore, explain to other people why they should not be shopping at Kohls or wherever and they should be going to so and so. To be honest, this online skate shop is also part of the same problem that you are discussing. It is nice because there is no overhead to pay for in terms of rent or utilities that one would need for a physical location. Also, I can buy stuff without dealing with social repercussions. Yet, if I want to hang out with you and skate in front of the shop, where will I find you? Does this mean that I will now be playing a video game in real time on your website with other skaters as we hang out together in front of the shop?

Capitalism is great for some and not so great for others. Capitalism is what is currently affecting our healthcare system in a negative way but it also provides access for people to make money in a variety of creative ways. I think some form of heavily watched capitalist society would be best in making it harder for people to become so insanely rich. I mean 90% of the wealth in this country is held by 10% of the population.

Ghost brings up an interesting point about our online shop as being part of the problem...because I both agree and disagree.....I agree because you would think at first glance that there are no expenses and that we would be able to undermine all the other shops around that are brick and mortar shops and run them out of business....That's not the case with us...We just want to be another option..and do something we have a passion for..I think CCS and Active Mail order and several Mailorder shops through the years even before the Internet (they used to be plastered mailorder ads in all the mags)are way more of a problem than say a little mom and pop online shop...it's all about buying power.. a small online shop can't buy like "BIG" online shops..they can sell things for way less...our goal is to offer customer service as best as you can get online...for example talking back and fourth with a customer on email about a product they are interested in...that's way more difficult at a big shop.....I don't even have a real point here...because everything is an oppinnion...which is cool about a blog...my thing is that it's hard for me to grasp how commercialized Skateboarding has become....getting back to Hawk...it is crazy that he has a line of products at a commercial giant like Kohls..but he has done so much for Skateboarding...some will want to see Skating go mainstream and others will want it to stay a subculture...I remember when I went to my local shop when I was 9 to buy my first deck...I wanted a Hawk but I didn't buy it because I thought that too many people had his board..I wanted something not as well known...so shit he was a so called sell out back then.....but hey I might sell our online shop to Walmart if they paid me 80 bazillion dollars...so I'm a sellout too...and so is everyone in a way...if you don't sell out to something you probably are pushing up daisies in some cemetary..I just hate associating Skateboarding with Corporate America..it's an oxy-pad-moran???

Consolidated Skateboards has been around a long time now...they have always been a liitle off the beaten path.....they do a lot in the effort to help small local skateshops...helping us out with pricing so that even if we buy just a few decks..we get fair pricing.....to have a fighting chance to survive the huge franchise stores and their huge buying power.........I'm not sure if people think about how how their small purchases affect things.....you need to sometimes be concious of where your money is going after it leaves your hands......Old Skull encourages to not only look for the best price....when buying let's say Skate gear....look into the companies and shops you are supporting and where your cash will go...if you care..you will consider spending money on product that will go back into Skateboarding...maybe helping get a park open...maybe just putting money into improving the quality of their stuff....I don't know...our Country is seeing some bad times.....corporations are running on fumes......Small specialty shops have been getting clipped off by these giants for years...maybe this is our chance to get back out there...crawl out from that rock and fight back...the honest fair way...strong support....small businesses sticking together......if we don't have something..we will direct a customer to another local shop that might be able to help them out...buying supplies from local shops.....eating food at local joints.....just think about where your money is going...if I made any sense..or if you disagree or have an oppinion..please write back

Do you know how to have fun on your Skateboard?

Sometimes when someone asks you a question, you have to respond with a question right back at them…..If someone asks you in a derogatory way “hey what tricks can YOU do?” ….Try ignoring their question…let your skating do the talking, and ask them “Do you know how to have fun on your Skateboard?”

Skateboarding, in my old as dirt opinion.. should always only be about having fun. I don’t care what kind of skating you’re doing, if you’re having fun, you’re skating….if you are out there trying to impress other skaters with your tricks or teasing other kids for not “Skating as good as you” that’s not all that cool…actually kinda lame …If someone we’re to ask me what I’d like to see in Skateboarding….I would say just go out and have fun…be creative..who cares what other people think…..”who’s more foolish the fool or the fool who follows”??? Go out skate..think of cool tricks or just cruise down the street…..some people might know every tech trick, but they can’t just cruise…if you are skating for the right reasons…you’re having fun, if you’re out there trying to be the best skater with all the sickest tricks and making fun of everyone else in the process…then you’re in it for the wrong reasons and you don’t understand skating for how I think it was meant to be…it’s not a competition when you are out there with your friends….so think about it…do you know how to have fun on your skateboard?…that’s the best trick in your bag if you do.

Thanks for the positive feedback. We are really trying hard to provide skateboarders with gear at reasonable prices and encourage more people to try skateboarding. Oh yeah, regarding the Roc City Park - a portion of all our proceeds from every sale will be donated to the Roc-City Park foundation. Remembering Samurai Skates
I am pretty nostalgic.....I can't help it...I was just wondering how many of you remember Samurai Skates? It was the only skateshop in Rochester, NY back in the late 80's....I know...that's pretty weird for you young skaters seeing how skateshops are all over the place these days. Well anyways...when I was 9 back in about 1987 all the kids in my neighborhood were talking about this skateshop in the city that sold all the good stuff....all we were used to was Nash and Veriflex.....the only pro models we saw at first were from a couple of the older kids and then from Transworld and Thrasher......all I know is that I was soooo amazed, excited, stoked, in awe of all those 80's Skateboards back then.....the whole image of Skateboarding pulled me right in...so a couple kids started begging their parents to take them to Samurai.....and they ended up being the first of our group to get Skateboards...real ones that is....there was a Schmitt Stix Lucero Jester, A Madrid X-Team Rider, a Lester and of course a hot pink Tony Hawk..these were all my friends first decks....then after what seemed like an extra extended period of time....I finally got my parents to take me to the almighty Samurai...which at that point was just a myth like Animal Chin....except my parents and I were on a "Search for Samurai Skates" so we found it...my Dad complained about the parking or lack there of and all I could smell was Chinese food from the Cathay Pagoda....this was 1988 by this point....and all these older kids were skating out front of the shop.....I was in awe....we went up to the door of the shop and they were actually handing out tickets with numbers on them because only a few people could be in there at one time because of the fire hazard....for those of you who were there...the first shop on Windsor street was real small.....to my parents it was like walking into a closet, but for an impressionable little 9 year old kid, this shop was the size of 10 Zumiez combined! I looked at all the decks and the shirts all over...the walls , ceilings.etc......my parents complained about the prices but they still let me have free reign picking out my deck.....I walked out of there with a blue Powell Peralta Steve Caballero, with blue Tracker Ultra Lights and Blue mini rat wheels....all that shit had to match! I still have that deck to this day..That complete was $150.00 back then...it's weird how Skateboards haven't gone up with inflation as much as other things....when Art at Samurai handed the finished complete over to me, that was when I had made it.....I was legit now...I had a bad ass board and I could now turn my Nash Executioner into a snowboard! You remeber a lot when you are that age...I bet if I was just a few years older, I wouldn't remember that experience the same way I do......all I can say is....with starting Old Skull Skateboards some 20 years after my first skateshop experience, I will feel that we succeded if at least one kid had a similar experience buying their first board at our shop.....I have a feeling that every local skateshop owner since Samurai would hope the same thing and if we all achieve that...we are all huge success stories in my eyes...
Please write back with a story of your about the late great Samurai Skates

Why I remember the Old School. Those boards were heavy! Why you had to be a MAN to skate in the old school. Why I remember when I was a young lad back in the day…we didn’t even have grip tape! Why you just knocked the slat off an old wooden pallet for a deck and left the nails IN for grip. That’s the way it was and we liked it. We didn’t have skate parks…we had parking lots. And you can forget about polyurethane wheels. Why we had clay wheels and that’s if we had wheels at all! And these were on fixed axels greased with Crisco…any you know what? They were FAST! That’s the way it was and we liked it! And there wasn’t anything like skateboard shoes. Why we’d make our own shoes out of leather…leather from footballs and varsity letter jackets we took by force! That’s the way it was when skaters were tough! That’s no lie kids…you’re lucky! The New School revolution yanked the rug out from under my Skatin I tell you what! Now, I’m from the old school you see…back in the early 90’s is when it ALL changed. I remember returning from spending the summer on the beach mostly surfing, but skating at night, only to find that EVERYTHING changed! My fishtail bigwheel ride was antiquated in ONE summer it seemed! Everyone had double tails and small wheels and were doing these crazy flip tricks…or trying to anyway. I never fully adapted! I still suck at kick flips and have NEVER pulled a Hard Flip (HAHA even those are OLD School Now!) Old school had way more style and I’m glad its back! You had to use your hands to pull tricks and not just grabs but flips and plants too! You got to be a Burley man to pull off a street plant never mind some sort of sex change handplant! I wish I were burly enough to do a handplant. Anyway, I am so stoked to see a mini Old School Revolution in both surfing and skateboarding in the last few years! I got an old school shape from OldSkull.com and the “feel” of the board was like going back in time! After riding super light and narrow boards for 10+ years it was great to get on something more solid and familiar. Ironically, Old school skating is alive and well here in California as well. You’d think that there’d be no turning back to the old ways in a place like California where new is always better? Not so! I’ve seen tricks and boards (some original!) at the skate parks that I haven’t seen in years! Old and young skaters pulling fastplants and handplants and layback tailslides on Old School boards! What! Out on the water it’s the same thing. Guys riding 70’s fish style surfboards and Ailpa stingers and 80’s style thrusters? It’s all good as long as you can pull your tricks with style! All the cool tricks from the old days are STILL cool and so are all the old BOARDS. I don’t think we will see a resurgence of snakewalking your Nash Executioner down the driveway. That will NEVER be cool, but rippin a big grind or boneless on an Old School Powell will always rule!

Oh man...the weather is upon us! Time to hang up the skate and go snowboarding? Naw...get creative and head for cover! I remember hitting up half completed houses to skate the basements when it was raining ot heading to the very illegal heated garage in the city! Don't do anything illegal kiddies! Times have changed...you'll end up in Guantanamo Bay on some sort of Homeland Security skateboard violation...but who knows the weather will probably be better down there. Or better yet, skate in the rain and have a powersliding for distance competition! You know where to get new decks when your board delams!
